Here is our guide to the best MTB trails in the Scottish Highlands. All of these fantastic trails can be found in the Highlands, and can be combined to make the perfect 3 to 6 night break in one of our campervans. Don’t worry about transporting your pride and joy – we will provide a cycle rack to store your bike on the tailgate of the van, keeping it safe and secure so you can get out and enjoy the trails day after day!
Mountain biking is gaining in popularity, and the rugged terrain here in the Highlands provides you with the ideal training ground to hone your bike handling skills!
HOW TO GET HERE
The first thing you’ll need to consider is how you’ll get here…. Inverness is well connected by road and rail – with breath taking scenery along the way! Space for your bike can be booked online when you book your train ticket, for details about this, visit the Scotrail website.
With daily flights into Inverness from airports across the UK and Europe, flying is also a viable option… “But what about my bike” I hear you say – worry not! Most airlines will allow you to take your bike along – for a small charge of course 😉
Take a look at the Loganair’s bicycle policy – or check with your airline before booking….
Once you’re here, we can arrange transfers from Inverness airport or railway station – make sure you request these when you book your campervan hire with us online.
We offer an external bike rack which can be fitted to any of our pop top campers on the tailgate.
MOUNTAIN BIKE TRAILS IN
THE HIGHLANDS
Whilst there are plenty of paths and trails suitable for mountain biking in Scotland, most people start with purpose built mountain biking tracks….These usually offer routes with varying difficulty – often using a colour grading system similar to ski resorts.
SANQUHAR WOODLANDS
Sanquhar Woodlands Mountain Bike Trails, near Forres is part of the Forres Community Woodlands Trust, and was set up in 2008 in a joint venture with The Forres Freeriders.
LAGGAN WOLFTRAX
Laggan Wolftrax in the Cairngorm National Park, offer 20 miles of purpose built trails – and boast a black run billed as the most technical single track in Scotland! They even have bike hire and a cafe on site too!
LEARNIE REDROCKS
Learnie Redrocks is owned by the Forestry Commission Scotland, and offers 10 miles of mountain biking tracks on the Black Isle – just 30 minutes drive from Inverness. With the picturesque villages of Rosemarkie, Fortrose & Cromarty nearby, there are plenty of places to refuel on coffee and cake after your exhilarating bike ride!
FOREST OF BALBLAIR
Travel further north and you’ll reach the Forest of Balblair, the black run here is said to test the most courageous of bikers – there is a gentler blue run too! Don’t forget to stop off at the Falls of Shin to catch a glimpse of the salmon leaping, and a tasty lunch at the popular Mac and Wild restaurant….
HIGHLAND WILDCAT BIKE TRAILS
Head back eastwards, and we reach Golspie and the Highland Wildcat Bike Trails. Uniquely, the trails all start in Golspie village, meaning there is plenty of opportunity to shop locally or re-fuel after your bike ride! The trails boast the longest single track descent in the UK at 7000m, and were voted “best destination in the UK” by MBR!
WITCH’S TRAILS
Heading south to the town of Fort William (known as the “Outdoor Capital of the UK” and home to our highest mountain Ben Nevis) you’ll find the Witch’s Trails. Here you can ride the “Broomstick Blue”, or if you’ve a head for heights, take the gondola up the mountain to hit the Nevis Red routes! If you time it right, you could even catch the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup, which is held here every June…!
If you’ve been inspired and can’t wait to get on the trails – head on over to our website booking page and book your perfect MTB holiday now!
