How to make your Dinette bed more comfortable

This is one of the most popular bed styles found in caravans. They are also popular in some motorhomes and campervans where they have a rear lounge area. There is a good reason for this. They make the best use of space in smaller vehicles and they serve a dual purpose.

Because in this case, the primary use of the upholstery is for seating, the foam used is very firm. This helps to support your weight when seated. But when used as a bed, your weight is distributed over a wider area. In this case, the firm foam makes the bed too firm for most people! There is also the issue of the joins and contours in the cushions adding to the discomfort.

Option 1

Is a Memory foam Travel topper, which will soften the surface making it more comfortable to sleep on. It will also smooth over some of the contours and joints and give the feel of an expensive mattress. The travel topper is ideal for this, as they are small, so can be rolled and stored in lockers or under seats when not in use.

You can find out more in our guide to the Duvalay range of memory foam toppers.

Option 2

Is the Duvalay sleeping bag. Combining a memory foam topper and duvet in a single cover. This creates a luxury sleeping bag where one side and the bottom is enclosed. The advantage of the Duvalay Sleeping bag is that the duvet and topper are in one piece. Again this can be rolled up and stored when not in use.

If you’re not familiar with the Duvalay Sleeping bag, check out this video we filmed with Andrew Ditton:

How to make your rock and roll or pop-top campervan bed more comfortable.

Most campervan conversions come fitted with a rock and roll bed. This helps to make the most of the available space. Again these are made with firm upholstery to support you while sitting. But can be hard when laying down

Many also have a pop-top roof fitted, which can add an extra double bed. Space, when folded down, is usually very small so a thin mattress is normally fitted to these

With space at a premium in a campervan, everything needs to take up as little space as possible.

Option 1

Would be a Duvalay Sleeping Bag. We use these in our fleet of hire campervans! They work very well on the rock and roll beds and the pop-top beds. They are the ultimate in Luxury sleeping bags. Great on there own and 2 put together, make the most amazing cosy double bed.

Option 2

Is a mattress topper and duvet combination. Here you have the option of using 2 individual travel toppers, this will be easier to roll up and store when not in use. Or a custom made to measure mattress topper stretching the full width of the bed can also work well.  This option is best used on a downstairs rock and roll bed, as the topper may be too large and cumbersome for a pop-top bed!

How to improve the comfort of a fixed bed in a caravan or motorhome

In larger motorhomes and caravans a fixed bed is very common. These give the ultimate in convenience as they are not used as seating during the day. This means the storage of bedding is not an issue.

Most vehicle manufacturers will be trying to keep there costs down. So they may not always use the best and most comfortable mattresses available to them

Here we have 2 options for making your next holiday sleep a much more luxurious experience.

motorhome, landscape, journey

Option 1

If you are finding your mattress too firm, or uncomfortable. Then we would suggest adding a Duvalay memory foam mattress topper. Available in 3 foam depths, and in 5 widths to suit most standard bed sizes.

Option 2

If a topper is not going to be enough. Then a custom-made mattress might be for you. These come in either memory foam or for the ultimate in luxury, 8-inch pocket sprung. You can have your bespoke lightweight mattress made especially for your vehicle. The mattresses can be made to any shape or size. All we need is the make and model of your vehicle, or we can have it made to your own bespoke design.

Some leisure vehicle suppliers fit the Duvalay premium mattresses as standard. Some Airstream caravans come with the Duvalay D-Luxe 8 inch sprung mattress. Swift use the Duvalay D-Lite mattresses in some of their caravans…
